After another round of testing, we still stand by all of our recommendations. We have added many new models in the notable competition segment.
Trying To Chill: The Pros And Cons Of Portable And Window Air Conditioning Units
Portable air conditioners are not as portable as their name might suggest, and they are one of the noisiest and least efficient ways to cool a room. But if you don’t have central air and window air conditioning isn’t an option, a portable air conditioner is the next best way to beat the heat – and if it’s for you, we recommend the Midea Duo MAP12S1TBL. It’s quieter, more powerful, and generally more comfortable than any of the other two dozen portable air conditioners we’ve tested (and researched) since 2016.
The Midea Duo’s self-contained twin-hose setup and powerful inverter compressor make it better at setting precise levels of comfort, while overall being quieter and more efficient than other machines.
Most portable air conditioners are pretty similar, but the Midea Duo MAP12S1TBL offers better cooling performance than other models, while using less energy and making less noise. Instead of just running at maximum speed, Midea’s inverter-driven compressors can operate at infinitely variable speeds, giving the unit more flexibility in how to achieve the desired temperature over a wide range of temperature and humidity conditions. In our tests, it was also remarkably effective at spreading cool air, never leaving a 1-degree temperature difference in the room. Unlike the single-hose wearables we typically recommend, the Duo features a unique “hose-in-hose” configuration, with the outlet and inlet contained in one large tube and split into two separate conduits, making it even more efficient. It’s one of the quietest portable ACs we’ve tested, with volume measured below normal conversation levels. Midea offers all the standard smart home features, including Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant support, and additional options for customized control, including a smartphone app and remote control.
How To Use Air Conditioning In The Bedroom
This portable air conditioner offers many thoughtful features, including a variable-speed, dual-rotor compressor, integrated hose for easy setup, and a convenient storage bag.
If the Midea Duo is not available, the LG LP1419IVSM is another great portable air conditioner option with a single duct efficient inverter-driven compressor. It has an overall similar setup, with built-in ducts and a top-mounted fan that makes the air conditioner sound like it’s blowing in and out with white noise and steady puffs of cool air, plus all the same smart home features. It’s a bit more expensive than the Midea and some readers have complained about the timbre of its sound (although we didn’t have any issues ourselves), but overall it’s still one of the best portable air conditioners you can find.
The Frigidaire Gallery Cool Connect GHPC132AB1 impressed us not only with its ability to cool a room to within half a degree, but also with its surprisingly low volume. While it doesn’t have the same power or efficiency as inverter models like the Midea or LG, the single-hose Frigidaire somehow managed to run at an even lower volume in our tests, beating both portable ACs by about 2 decibels. The Window installation kit wasn’t quite as robust, though, and while it offered the same smart home features, we encountered some frustrations with the way they worked.

This popular model matches our other picks in cooling performance but feels cheap — it has clunky buttons and lacks features like cord storage.
The popular, affordable Black+Decker BPACT14WT delivers better than anything else in its price range – where cooling performance counts. But it’s a little rough around the edges compared to our other picks: The panel is loud, the controls are bulky, and it lacks the nice touches we like on some other models. But still it works and is a good option if you need a portable air conditioner at a price close to the window AC price.
We’ve been reviewing and testing air conditioners in general since 2013 and evaluating portable units specifically since 2016. In that time, we’ve invested more than 125 hours researching and testing the entire field, and spent dozens of hours focusing specifically on wearable devices. We considered around 175 different wearable models and conducted hands-on trials of over 20 of the best options available. We’ve met with manufacturers at trade shows and events, corresponded with sources in interviews over the years, and combed through the extensive Department of Energy materials on AC efficiency standards.

Thom Dunn has written wirecutter guides on window air conditioners, room fans, space heaters, and more. He has also published articles for The Huffington Post, Upworthy, Vice, The Weather Channel and other media, and in 2019 he was commissioned by Cornell University to create a full-length play about community responses to climate change. He is especially good at being warm.
This guide builds on previous work by Liam McCabe, senior staff writer at Wirecutter, who has been writing about tools for Wirecutter since 2013.
If you don’t have central air conditioning, the first thing you should look into is window air conditioners or ductless mini-splits, which are usually more efficient and (in the case of window units) cheaper. But not every room or window type can accommodate a window air conditioner, and mini-split installations can be too expensive or complicated. If you find yourself in one of these situations, a portable air conditioner can mean the difference between muggy surroundings and comfort.

However, you still need a window for the portable air conditioner to vent the heat outside. It bears repeating because it’s a common misconception about what’s “portable”: all these devices need is a window and a power outlet just a few feet from where they’re operating.
Our main concern when choosing a portable air conditioner was to find a unit with decent cooling performance, followed by low noise levels, decent efficiency, and other quality-of-life factors that we measured when we saw our finalists in person.
We used independent evaluations to screen candidates for cooling performance. A primary measure was seasonally adjusted cooling capacity, or SACC, a US Department of Energy calculation that represents the weighted average capacity of a portable air conditioner under a series of test conditions. The SACC metric not only measures cooling performance, but also measures the device’s performance on sweltering or hot and dry days, and takes into account the effect of heat returning to the room from the device’s vents. Since 2016, the SACC has gradually replaced the less comprehensive British Thermal Unit (Btu) rating as the standard measure of AC power. Many air conditioners include both numbers—the Btu measurements developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) are widely adopted—so we’ve included both figures in our selection.

In 2020, the Department of Energy also finalized new standards for Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio (CEER), a new metric based on the SACC that takes into account additional factors such as standby energy consumption along with the previously used Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) measurement. We didn’t look too far into those particular numbers until the AC met our minimum SACC threshold of 7,200 Btu per hour; Anything other than that, and AC isn’t even worth watching. (If in doubt, consult the EnergyGuide label on the packaging.)
We were not concerned about the large size of the air conditioner for the space. The main risk of using an oversized air conditioner is over-cooling the area before dehumidifying, and all of these units have dehumidifying capabilities that can remove moisture without cooling the room if the room gets too cold and humid. But we were more concerned with making recommendations that could actually provide adequate performance. Portable air conditioners are notoriously underperforming, usually less efficient than their window-mounted counterparts, and we’ve often heard of people buying a smaller unit, finding it unsatisfactory, and either returning it or swapping it for a larger one. Our tests have also confirmed this over the years; We’ve seen supposedly efficient models that barely made a dent in cold rooms, for which they were perfectly sized. These results helped us in our decision to go bigger and not focus so much on claimed square footage. Therefore, we have established a baseline SACC of 7,200 Btu per hour, which is often 14,000 Btu by the old ASHRAE standards.
After our performance requirements were met, we gathered half a dozen finalists and judged them individually, looking for the following factors:

In early 2019, we started comparing two and one tube models using the same criteria, and we didn’t reject any models based on their tube count. However, our research eventually led us to single-tube portable models—in part because many newer models use this design. In fact, we haven’t found any attractive new dual-hose models from Major
