Best Conditions For Hot Air Ballooning
Rarely does a day go by without some dreamy photo of the sky above Cappadocia filled with hot air balloons popping up on Instagram. But while this is an amazing experience, it requires careful planning. You need to consider hours, company, price and safety. In this post, I will share what I think is the best time to visit, how to research the different companies and what the experiences include, along with some important advice to manage your own. expected. .
Don’t Forget… Hot Air Balloon Flights Are Weather Dependent!
Many of you may have found this post after reading my blog about the hot air ballooning experience in Cappadocia, and after receiving so many questions, I thought it would be good to pop together a guide if what to expect, how to plan and make the most of your experience.
Most hot air balloons in Cappadocia leave before sunrise. Tour bus companies collect you from local accommodation and cave hotels between 4-5am, and take you to their office where you sign waivers before being taken to the launch site . Don’t worry – I promise it’s worth the painful alarm call!
Recently someone messaged me saying they were flying from Istanbul to Cappadocia for the day. As well as thinking they would lose SO much, they didn’t realize that balloon flights only happen at dawn! They traveled all the way, but just missed the main event.
Where To Go Hot Air Ballooning In New Jersey
I recommend staying for four days which gives enough time to explore all the amazing things to do in Cappadocia, including the hot air balloon experience.
If you want to know the best way to travel from Istanbul to Cappadocia, see my post on travel options here.
You might think it’s a good idea to save the big moment until the end of your trip as a big old finale, but it’s not. don’t! Here’s why…
Hot Air Balloon Safety Tips
Hot air balloons do not fly in bad weather. Every morning the pilots in Cappadocia have to wait for the go-ahead from the Turkish Civil Aviation, before they can take their groups to the launch sites. From what I’ve heard, the balloons fly about 250 days a year, and most of the cancellations happen in the winter months.
If you are visiting Cappadocia for an extended period of time, be sure to book your balloon flight in advance. Although you can book a few days in advance, I don’t think it’s worth the risk of missing out! Remember – this is the most popular thing to do in Cappadocia, and one of the main reasons people visit the region.
I just looked at the latest prices and they vary from 180 EUR to 250 EUR depending on the company, the duration of the flight and the level of luxury you go for. Some companies offer extras such as champagne ceremonies and certificates after landing, or wider baskets to make the flight more comfortable.

Trust me, it’s the best 200 EUR you’ll spend on a travel experience. Besides the helicopter flight I did in my hometown of London, and maybe the paragliding in Rio de Janeiro, this is one of the most memorable activities from my years of travel.
Well duh, this is not an experience for anyone who suffers from vertigo. Although the height you can reach in your hot air balloon depends on the weather and the experience of your pilot, there are times when you won’t believe how far away the ground looks!
Last time we were told we’d climb about 800m, but I’ve seen different altitudes mentioned by the balloon companies on their websites! It should be noted that the maximum height allowed by Turkish Civil Aviation is 6,000 feet (1828m) but you probably won’t get close to that height!

Baskets are bigger than you think. I thought I would be stuck in a crowd and barely see. That is definitely not the case. On the largest (cheaper) flights you can expect up to 28 people per basket. Small ones will probably bring 16. Check before you book where you will be participating.
I’ve heard that large balloons/baskets tend to be stable, but I’ve never seen mine unstable, so I don’t know how big of a consideration that is.
Most flights give you a one-hour experience, but some take up to 75 or 90 minutes. Personally, I think an hour is enough to take in the beauty and magic of it all, and take lots of pictures. However, it may depend a little on your take off point as to how much scenery you can see during that time.

As mentioned, balloon flights can be booked every single day of the year, but they only last about 250 days a year. Check your balloon company’s cancellation policy before booking. Most offer full refunds and check availability in the next few days, so hopefully you can be rebooked quickly.
Generally, the rules are that children must be 6 or older, understand the pre-flight briefing, and be tall enough to see over the basket. If they can only see, I’m not sure it will be a fun experience for them, so it’s better to wait until they’re a little taller! Again, check the latest rules and your company’s T’s and C’s before you book.
Unfortunately not, but it is about safety. Sometimes there are bumpy landings and not worth the risk or worry.
How To Plan Your Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Trip
The hot air balloon market in Cappadocia is crowded, with many companies offering different balloon packages and prices. Some have better safety records than others, and ultimately reviews are a good place to start. For me, I want to have a guide who speaks good English, has a lot of experience and is fun, like this tour!
A GoPro on a stick mount is your best friend on your hot air balloon flight. Get incredible views, hypersmooth videos and selfies from outside the basket. You won’t regret it!
I would describe the feeling of being in a hot air balloon as one of floating or flying. It’s relaxed and effortless. While the burner makes a loud noise, when it doesn’t, it’s a peaceful experience. Just imagine you are a bird flying through the scenery!

With so many conditions to monitor, flight routes vary from day to day. Everything from the launch and landing areas, the height of the balloons, the speed they travel and the landmarks they pass.
Wherever you go, the views are amazing, especially when you see the sky around you full of colorful balloons! It is worth noting that only very high pilots will take you under fairy chimneys or near other balloons.
It depends on when you visit, because more demand = more balloons, but most days around 100 balloons take to the Cappadocia sky. In peak season up to 150. There are regulations in place that allow up to 100 balloons to fly before sunrise and then another 50 shortly after.
Take A Hot Air Balloon Over Melbourne With Global Ballooning
I recommend visiting between March and June, or in autumn from September to November. Peak summer = more people, higher prices, and busier trips!
However, for something completely different, visit in winter when the ground is covered in snow. The scenery looks very different (and very attractive!) Just be prepared for a slightly higher risk of cancellations.
No, but every activity has risks and sometimes there are accidents. Most of the issues in Cappadocia are due to atmospheric changes (wind etc) or pilot inexperience. From the research I found online, out of almost 1.5 million passengers, less than 10 people died and less than 50 were injured. It’s safer than getting on a plane or in a car if that helps?!
Hot Air Balloons Are Useless
No matter what time of year you visit, it’s cold first thing in the morning, and while the burner is hot, it gets colder at higher altitudes.
I wore loose trousers, a t-shirt, a jumper and a jacket, with trainers. I want to be comfortable, warm and enjoy the experience to the max! I don’t wear a hat, but many do. If you are tall, you will appreciate it as you feel the heat from the burner. Also don’t forget the sunglasses when the sun shines. Also, keep in mind that the baskets are quite tall, so you’re a bit protected at once
