However, many people don’t want to go to the trouble or expense of installing a permanent wall-mounted unit that may only be used a few weeks out of the year. Instead, a portable air conditioner (PAC) can be moved between rooms and stored during the winter. Remember that in order to work properly as an air conditioner, they must be installed through a window or through a wall through a deck.
Heating, Ventilation, And Air Conditioning
Although some models come with window kits to make it easier, these usually only work with sliding or sash windows, so unless you’re particularly DIY-savvy, you’ll need to install an air conditioner whenever you want. . The window opens, making it even more difficult to do. The units are all quite large and heavy, so make sure there’s room near a window to use them and remember that if it doesn’t have a pipe, it’s actually an evaporative air cooler and not an air conditioning unit.
Don’t expect these devices to be cheap. Prices start from around £250 and the more powerful the machine the more expensive it will be. Cooling requirements are measured in British Thermal Units (BTU) and the higher the rating, the larger the air conditioner’s cooling capacity.
A 7000 BTU unit will cool a small room of 18 to 20 square meters, but always check the size of the room before purchasing as a unit will not cool the space efficiently with too few BTUs. Other features to look out for include remote control, a programmable timer and a sleep mode so it cools down quietly at night.

We consider a range of portable air conditioner units in our home, especially on hot June and July days, based on price, portability, cost and how well they cool us despite the baking temperatures outside. Note that with such high demand for conditioners during last month’s heat wave, some are currently out of stock but will be available again soon.

It ticks every box for a portable air conditioning unit that’s easy to use around the house, (relatively) unobtrusive, and capable of being stored when not in use, all for a reasonable price.
The 4 Best Portable Air Conditioners Of 2023
It is not suitable for large spaces as it only has a 7000 BTU rating but should work in rooms between 12-22 square meters. It was more than adequate in our bedroom and living room where we needed it and the low BTU meant it was smaller and lighter than most units we tested, weighing just 20.5kg. grams and was only 70 cm tall. This means we can easily move between rooms if needed. It also had the longest hose of all the equipment so we had a bit more flexibility in its positioning.
Best of all, it comes with both a standard window kit and a flexible kit – enjoy! – Works on any window and makes a big difference in cooling. It has a 24-hour timer, sleep mode and remote control, and uses the new R290 refrigerant which is kinder to the environment. The all-around champion of heat waves.

Trane Central Air Conditioners
Air conditioning units can never be things of beauty but this DeLonghi model was by far the best looking we’ve tested, with a matte black surface, black remote and glossy digital screen to match. It’s easy to work with so you can remotely tweak the temperature or fan speed, or even program a timer without calling from the couch. It dropped the temperature in our kitchen in no time, thanks to its high BTU rating, and because the hose was thinner than other models, we didn’t have to open our windows as wide. It has a dehumidifier function, a timer and a usage light that indicates whether the conditions are unsafe, acceptable or optimal.
Best of all, it was quieter than most units, though not as quiet as the name suggests. It works with a decibel range between 49 and 53 and we quickly stopped really working in the corner. As a result it would be a great addition to a home office or a child’s bedroom, although it can cool very large rooms up to 110 cubic meters.
There’s no such thing as a lightweight air conditioner but it was one of the lightest models we tested, at just 21.7kg, so we didn’t need an army of people to lift it to cool the bedroom. It also has casters and is slimmer than most other units so it was easy to wheel down if needed.

It was up and running in moments, although we had to hold the hose behind the device while moving it toward the window as it closed. There is no window compatible kit so you need to open the window wide enough for the hose to fit. We were surprised to find that the unit cooled the room fairly quickly despite battling the hot weather outside, and it reached a comfortable temperature in no time. It is not too noisy, and has a 24-hour program timer, automatic diagnosis function and remote control. This is a good option if you plan to store it in the winter when the weather changes.
This well-priced air conditioning unit was not too heavy at 31 kg and comes on casters so it can be easily moved between rooms without any problems. It has cooling, dehumidification and ventilation functions and we were impressed with how quickly it cooled our living room, the cooling effect was felt almost instantly. It comes with an easy-to-use remote control and has a timer and night mode so it doesn’t disturb your sleep. At its other settings, it’s a bit on the noisy side so you may need to turn on the TV if you’re watching in the same room.
Our own hand? We would have liked the pipe to be a bit longer as we had to put it closer to our window to get it out. On the plus side, it’s compatible with the Smart Fabric Window Kit (£14.99, Screwfix.com) which can be bought separately so this model works with almost any window.
Central Air Conditioning
Packing a heavy air conditioner unit for winter is a real pain. This multi-purpose machine can also be used as a fan and dehumidifier so when the temperature drops, it prevents humidity in your home. It was one of the best-looking machines we tested, with curved edges and an LED touchscreen, so it won’t look too bad sitting in the corner for long periods of time.
When you start cooling, there are two speed settings that are also useful when you prefer the machine to be a little less noisy. The fan does a great job of directing cool air throughout the room rather than concentrating it in one area and the temperature is adjustable between 15-31C, which is a slightly wider range than other units. It has a 24-hour timer for efficient operation, overheating protection and a self-steaming system, although we found that we had to manually empty the accumulated water when we used it for long periods of time. However, it is a good purchase that you can use throughout the year.
There are several ways to clean a portable air conditioner without a window. This includes placing a portable air conditioning unit near the exterior door or adding a vent to the wall or ceiling.
Window Ac Buying Guide: 6 Things To Keep In Mind Before Buying One
Portable air conditioners typically use anywhere from 700 to 1500 watts depending on the BTU rating. The amount of electricity used per hour then varies with its wattage.
To install a portable air conditioner, place it near a window or move it outside and make sure the window kit (if one is included) makes a secure seal. After that, place the ventilation pipe according to its length.
Depending on the BTU rating of the product, a portable air conditioner can cost anywhere from £250 to £1,000. Although fans are very cheap, a portable air conditioner is worth the investment if you want to cool a large space.
Thinking Of Buying An Air Conditioner? Consider A Heat Pump.
Cheaper models with lower BTU ratings are below the £500 mark and generally not worth buying unless you want to bet a small room. High BTU models can be large, expensive and cool
