Dubai City With Air Conditioned Streets
Summer temperatures are now reaching 46°C (115°F) in Qatar, where the 2022 FIFA World Cup has already been moved to winter to avoid scorching heat.

Last year, the small Gulf state began using air conditioning in its soccer stadiums to keep fans and players cool.
But now, giant coolers have been installed on sidewalks and outdoor malls, making the temperatures bearable for people going about their daily lives.
And in Doha, the country’s capital, the Public Works Authority painted Abdullah Bin Jassim Street, near one of the city’s largest markets, blue to lower the temperature of the asphalt between 59 and 68 degrees F.

Roads in Qatar’s capital, Doha, have been painted blue because the paint absorbs less heat than black asphalt, keeping the surface cooler for longer.
Cold air will be pumped into the stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the Gulf state, through large cooling nozzles connected to chilled water.
Blue roads help reduce the temperature because dark roads absorb the sun’s heat more than lighter roads reflect it.

The 18-month experiment runs on a 650-foot (250 m) stretch of road and uses a 0.003-inch (1 mm) thick blue coating with a special heat-reflecting pigment.
Engineer Saad Al-Dosari said: “Temperatures on dark asphalt are 20 degrees Celsius higher than the actual temperature because black attracts and radiates heat.”
This summer, Los Angeles painted its streets with a gray white paint that can be 23°F colder than a black surface.

Doha (pictured) is very hot, partly because it is located on a peninsula in the Persian Gulf, where the surface water temperature averages around 32.4 °C, temperatures in the city can reach 46°C.

The way air conditioning works in Qatar is that after piping chilled water into the street, it pumps cold air onto the pavement through cooling nozzles.
Qatar is particularly vulnerable to extreme heat because the country is a peninsula, a piece of land that juts out into the water, in the Persian Gulf.
Jos Lelievld, an atmospheric chemist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, said: “These areas are warming faster than the rest of the world, and in some cities there is also the urban heat island effect and urban pollution “.

In an effort to help everyone stay cool, city planners built north-facing sidewalks and streets to take advantage of the breeze that comes from that direction.
Hossam Almeer, a 30-year-old data scientist working for the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) said of the blue route: “I think it’s great that the government is open to using technological innovation to solve the problems of living in desert..
“The degree of cooling could have a real impact on our electricity use, as air conditioning accounts for almost 70 percent of household electricity use.”

NOAA climate monitoring chief Deke Arndt says all but the western third of the United States saw a record or near record for the month.
Arndt says this is warming that has been occurring for decades due to gases that trap heat from burning fossil fuels.
A total of 396 temperature records were broken in the Northern Hemisphere, with Germany, France and the Netherlands experiencing the most record-breaking hot days.

Data from climate experts Berkeley Earth in California found monthly highs were recorded on 1,200 separate occasions north of the equator.
Experts say global warming is to blame for the heat and that record temperatures are becoming more common.
