Joe’s Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning
You may have encountered mechanical contractors without even realizing it. Many mechanical contractors call themselves “plumbing and heating services” without necessarily marketing themselves as mechanics. This is because plumbing and heating are more common terms used when potential customers are looking for specific services.

When John Aramendia started a plumbing, heating and air conditioning company with his brother in 1988, he went around the neighborhood knocking on doors to get the business started.
Plumbing Business Card
The unconventional approach paid off. They converted Aramendia Plumbing, Heating & Air Ltd. into a business with 90 employees and 50 company vehicles before selling its assets to Service Experts Heating & Air LLC for $24 million in 2017.
And that should have been it. John Aramendia took early retirement with his wife, Ann.
Now John, 54, and Ann, 51, are back in the world of blocked drains and broken air conditioners with the help of 1st Call Plumbing, Heating & Air. They were joined by two sons, Jake (26) and Bab (21).

“We’re building something big with kids seeing how it’s done from the ground up, which is very important to me,” said John Aramendia. “I always told them that if you don’t start from the bottom, you will never run the company that I run. I think it’s important to know what you’re doing and understand what guys go through in the industry (and) what it takes to get the job done.”
About a year after the establishment of the new company, 1. Call has about 35 employees and 20 company cars. Growth has exceeded their expectations, so they are now remodeling their old company’s store near Interstate 35 and Weidner Road. The space is at least double the size of their current space on Arion Parkway near San Antonio International Airport.
In John’s office at 1st Call’s current digs, John and Anne Aramendia recently discussed the old company, their brief retirement, and the inability to use the family name in the new venture. The following transcript has been edited for brevity and clarity.
Best Plumber Los Angeles
JA: The first call started almost a year ago from scratch. I had my old company a long time ago and had my 1st call. I ran them both, but (Challenge 1) was too hard for the staff.
AA: Are you confused? We had two plumbing fixtures. John creates. That’s what he does. He likes to build, make, use, empower people. However, this is a completely different story. Anyway, we have these two companies and one of them was 1st Call Plumbing, Heating and Air. And with our other company that we ran, it was very difficult to hire premium people as well. So in the end we didn’t dissolve (1st call) but just put it on the back burner.
ME: That’s right. However, there is a federal trademark and we have an agreement not to use the name. This is John and Ann, and we’re from the 1st call.

ME: It was. It was kind of weird. I wanted to open a car repair shop. My brother (Joe) was a master plumber and he said, “Why don’t we go into plumbing? You run the business and I’ll be the plumber.” I said, “Okay, we’ll try. Don’t expect me to be the plumber, though.’
ME: I founded my old company when I was 21 years old. I really didn’t know anything about anything. I had to learn the hard way. As a child I went door to door mowing lawns. I always found a way to make money. That’s probably how I became a businessman.
AA: We met in 1990. He worked seven days a week, 24 hours a day. I worked at a bank and he would go to lunch with me every day for about two years before we got married.

AA: I did a few gigs here and there. There was no one in the office when Jake was born and I remember he was in the lawnmower (in the office). The kids were always number 1. As soon as they started school, I started spending a few hours here and there with him in the office.
ME: I like it. We are always together. We try to go out and have lunch almost every day, just like when we used to go out.
AA: It’s 24/7. (Now turning to John.) Don’t say no! This. It’s 24/7. We are not available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are open seven days a week, from 7 to 7. We live and breathe it. So, no, we’re not separating anything.
The Joseph S. Groh Foundation
JA: It was a great opportunity. Stress and pressure wear people down. Sometimes you need a break. It’s 24 hours a day if you’re a business owner. You really can’t relax and forget things. You keep getting phone calls or emails.
ME: I was able to go on vacation for the first time in my life since I started at 21. When we first got married, we didn’t go on vacation. There was no rest.
ME: I really enjoy what I do. I thought two years was a great break. Now I’m ready to work again. I realized how much I really love to work and I really enjoyed building a great company and improving employees.

AA: To a great extent. I seem to have closed my mouth. I am here in the role of second plan. He does what he wants. I just go with the flow. But, yeah, that wasn’t my (plan). It’s not my job to hold him back. What he wants to do is important, so I will support him and be involved as much as I can.
AA: It was a big confusion. That’s why we started saying, “1st Call Sanplumbing, Heating & Air, our only family owned company” in our advertising to try to avoid (confusion). We still get a lot of calls with inquiries. I answer the phone almost every day. I will say, “(This company) has been sold. We are not affiliated with this company. They are two separate entities. How can I help you?”
ME: That (name) was part of the deal. and
