I give this company 5 stars and especially their lead technician, Ken, who installed a new condenser on a unit my elderly mother owned. Ken arrived, began work, and was struck by a particularly violent thunderstorm. He could have left it for the next day near the end of the work day, but instead he waited out the worst of the storm in his truck, then as the storm slowed, it ended and he was pretty drenched when he left. Capable, professional and obviously willing to go the extra mile to help cool the house in this intense heat wave. We appreciate your service!
I have been a customer of Nichols & Phipps for over 20 years and this is the first time I have had a bad experience. A new heat pump and a new indoor unit were installed eight years ago. We have the service plan, where they come to check twice a year. They were there in November and said everything was great. They came on December 9th (I think) to see why my heating is low and if the device is working continuously. A technician came that day and told me after 3-4 hours that I needed a new compressor. He told me his manager would call me. I waited an hour and then called. I was advised that a new compressor (parts and labor) would cost $2400. He also discussed the possibility of a new unit, which would cost about $7,000. I decided to replace the compressor. They advised that the compressor would need to be ordered and it would take 2-3 business days, he expected it to arrive on Monday and they would be home by Tuesday. On Monday before I left work I called to check on the time and was told the party wasn’t there and probably wouldn’t be until Wednesday so he said they would be there Thursday. If I hadn’t called, I would have taken the day off for nothing. They came now on Thursday, December 17th. The technician was at home all day to replace the compressor. When he came up he said it wasn’t fixed and needed a new part, a diverter valve. He would return as soon as possible to replace it. I took ASAP the next day but couldn’t check out as the office was already closed. I occupied the office the next day. When I called to see where it was, they said the part had to be ordered and they would be there on Monday to replace it. At this point I got really upset and told them I had to go on vacation the next day and if I had to wait and leave on Tuesday I might as well not go. So, they said they would pick up the part and have it at my house on Saturday. Ky came back on Saturday and was there again pretty much all day, but now the heat was working. When he handed over the bill, it was about $4,100. The new price was never discussed with me and when I got the bill it just said parts and labor. It was not an itemized bill. I paid the bill, but I wasn’t happy. If I had known, I would have chosen a new system. I think the biggest problem was the lack of communication from Nichols & Phipps. I have to say the technician was very polite and did his job. I told him that my disappointment was not his fault. Not sure if I will use this company again though.
Nichols Phipps was hired to service the HVAC system because the building inspector had turned the system on because of the loud noise. The air conditioner worked well apart from the noise. the technician came out to the house, removed the ac panel and turned on his instruments to take a reading. The panel was constantly off. They said the system shows high value. The technician called his superior for help. At this point I was really worried. They then said the system’s compressor was malfunctioning. It seemed strange to me because the house was extremely cool. I was not satisfied with his explanation. Then I called the office
