Promaster City Air Conditioning – I want my roof to remain prestigious with racks for solar power, antennas for cell boosters, and maybe an awning. If not clean and smooth. I want to have air conditioning in the van and I’m trying to find a way. I think the best way is a split system. I think that’s the name. Is it a head unit that blows air and is connected to something to remove moisture? I have something like this in my gallery, only I never really thought about it for a van, but it works great for my 450 square meter gallery. Does anyone have any recommendations on this, or am I just a madman trying to think of a way to keep this poodle girl cool. If you have any suggestions on how and where to mount the various components, I’m all ears, literally, that would be weird.

Check out the Danhard air conditioning system (http://www.danhard.com/ac.htm) – it is a separate system. I installed mine with the condenser and compressor under the platform, and the evaporator inside. However: You either need 120VAC to run the compressor, or you have to take advantage of the motor-mounted compressor.

… If I were to make a non-roof air conditioner for a van – would consider a portable unit. If it is for a permanent installation, it will leak sideways and possibly penetrate the floor. At least one person did temporary installation with the unit between the front seats and removing the entry window. Rear cooling is accomplished by a cover that blocks the “living” area behind the seat but has openings for cool air to flow into that area.

The most obvious advantage is the positive pressure of cold airflow in the living room… There are tons of youtube videos on installing portable air conditioners – some are better than others…

Mine is a small window AC that is installed in the van, and exhaust through the floor below. Couldn’t see or hear from outside.

The same 5000 ~ 6000 BTU/hr window unit type used on some trailers and even motorhomes (in the toy pickup garage area) but ventilated from behind. Most of them are mounted flush so it doesn’t look too bad.

You may also want to take a look at AC Cool Cat. They are very similar to window units but leave the back flush with the wall. It’s also not hidden from 100% view. I think you have to get used to it.

I tried to install the AC on the roof and found it excessive and noisy. My dual hose portable cools the van well, is much quieter, more efficient, cheaper and easier to install. The biggest disadvantage is taking up internal space.

The EasyChill one is interesting….not sure what temperature range it works with….a friend uses that system but it’s much bigger….lives in New Mexico I think around 7000 feet….santa fe.. ..i believe its really an old way to chill….. never heard of it except in ncis….then not really into tv

I can see how that would work fine. I would reconsider using a portable ac unit and keeping it in the garage.

Be warned: anything that involves heat – whether creating it or moving it – will take a lot of power. To cool a van would need about 600W-1200W of power, it doesn’t matter if it’s 12V or 120V – that’s just thermodynamics and Carnot’s law. You’ll need to run the engine or onboard power to cool for over an hour or so – I have a 7200Wh battery and I could only manage about 90 minutes of run time before the battery died.

LG released a 9500 btu window unit with a variable speed compressor. This can be an interesting option for RVers as it won’t have a jump start. And the compressor can run at a slower speed if the time allotment point is reached.

There’s a sprinter build where the builder took the mini split unit…. took the outdoor unit apart…. put the condenser under the van… compressor in the van. The unit is over 28 seer… but 240v.
