Race City Heating & Air Conditioning – Map of geothermal heating and cooling systems to support community loads. Narrated by Sarah Chaney.

Imagine a home where the temperature is always comfortable, but the heating and cooling systems are invisible. This system works efficiently but does not require much maintenance and knowledge from the owners.

The air smells fresh; You can hear the chirping of birds and the wind gently rustling through the trees. As the roots of a tree exchange the necessities of life with its leaves and branches, so the house shares energy with the earth. Sounds comfortable, right?

Geothermal heating and cooling makes this dream a reality. Geothermal HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) brings buildings into contact with the soil by taking advantage of underground heat for heating in winter and cooling in summer.

The temperature outside changes with the seasons, but due to the Earth’s insulating properties, the temperature underground does not change much. The temperature 4 to 6 feet below ground remains relatively constant throughout the year. A geothermal system, consisting of a system of buried pipes and an internal regulating device called an underground loop and/or an injection pump, to a re-injection well, supplies these constant temperatures with “free” energy. does

(Note that geothermal HVAC is not to be confused with “geothermal energy,” which is the process of generating electricity directly from the heat underground. This is done inside the utility and uses a variety of processes, typically by heating water to a boiling point…)

The pipes that make up the ground loop are usually made of polyethylene, which can be buried horizontally or vertically, depending on the characteristics of the site. If any water is available, engineers may prefer to design an “open-loop” system in which wells are drilled into groundwater. The water is pumped, forced past the heat exchanger, and then “re-injected” to return the water to the same climate.

In winter, the fluid circulating through the system’s ground loop or well absorbs heat stored in the ground and transfers it inside. An indoor unit pumps the heat to a higher temperature and distributes it throughout the house like an air conditioner in reverse. In the summer, a geothermal HVAC system extracts heat from the building and transfers it through a ground loop/pump to a re-injection well, where the heat is stored in the cooler ground/aquifer.

Unlike traditional heating and cooling systems, geothermal HVAC systems do not burn fossil fuels to produce heat; They only transfer heat to the Earth. Generally, electricity is used only to run equipment fans, compressors and pumps.

Advancing Equity: Review Of The Biden Administration’s Efforts In Its First Year To Implement A Racial Equity Agenda

Geothermal cooling and heating systems have three main components: a heat pump device, a liquid heat exchanger (open or closed loop), an air transfer system (ducts) and / or radiant heating (on the floor or elsewhere).

Geothermal heat pumps and all other types of heat pumps have an efficiency that is rated according to the coefficient of performance or COP. It is a scientific method to determine how much energy a system is moving and how much it is expending. Most geothermal heat pump systems have a COP of 3.0-5.0. This means that for every unit of energy to power the system, three to five units of heat are provided.

Geothermal systems require little maintenance. When installed correctly, a buried loop can last for generations. Because the unit’s fans, compressors and pumps are kept indoors protected from harsh weather conditions, they last for years, often decades. In general, periodic inspections, filter changes, and annual coal cleaning are the only maintenance required.

Architecture And Design Ideas To Cool Down

They fight with nature, not against it, and do not emit greenhouse gases. (As mentioned earlier, they use less electricity to operate because they are tied to the global average temperature.)

As part of the growing green building movement, geothermal HVAC systems are becoming a common feature of eco-friendly homes. Green projects accounted for 20 percent of all new homes built in the United States last year. According to a Wall Street Journal article, by 2016, green housing will grow from $36 billion to $114 billion. This is close to 30-40% of the total housing market.

But much of the knowledge about geothermal heating and cooling is based on old knowledge or pure myth. In our new book, Modern Geothermal HVAC Engineering and Control Applications (Egg/Cunniff/Oreo -McGraw-Hill 2013), co-authors Greg Cunniff, Carl Oreo, and I debunk many of these myths.

Fact: A geothermal HVAC system uses only one unit of electricity to move up to five units of cooling or heating from the ground to the building.

Fact: Geothermal HVAC systems use 4 times more kilowatt-hours than photovoltaics and wind power. While these other technologies certainly play a role, geothermal HVAC is the most effective way to reduce the environmental impact of air conditioning spaces.

3. Geothermal ventilation systems require a lot of space or real estate to accommodate underground polyethylene piping loops.

Fact: Depending on the nature of the site, the ground loop may be buried vertically, which means it should be slightly above the ground. Or if there is water that can absorb water, only a few square meters of real land is needed. Remember that water returns to the aquifer after passing through the heat exchanger, so it should not be “used up” or otherwise adversely affected.

Fact: Earth loops can last for generations. Because heat exchangers are protected in the indoor environment, they usually work for decades. When it needs to be replaced, installing a loop or well is very expensive, so it is much less expensive than installing the entire geothermal system. New technical guidelines eliminate the problem of storing geothermal heat, so the heat can be changed indefinitely. In the past, some poorly designed systems warmed or cooled the Earth’s surface over time, resulting in insufficient temperature gradients for the system to function.

Fact: They are effective for cooling and can be designed to eliminate the need for an additional heating source if needed, but some users find that it is more economical to have a smaller backup system on colder days. . to be small

7. Geothermal HVAC systems cannot heat water, pools and homes at the same time. Fact: The system can handle multiple loads at the same time.

Fact: Geothermal systems don’t actually use water. If any water is used to exchange heat with the ground, all the water will return to the waterfall. In the past, there were “pumping and dipping” processes that wasted water through heat exchangers, but now they are very rare. When used commercially, geothermal HVAC systems eliminate millions of gallons of water that would otherwise evaporate in cooling towers in conventional systems.

Fact: Federal and local incentives range from 30 to 60 percent of the total cost of a geothermal system, making the system’s initial cost competitive with conventional equipment. A standard air source HVAC system costs about $3,000 per ton of heating and cooling capacity in new construction (homes typically use one to five tons). Geothermal HVAC systems start at $5,000 per ton and can reach $8,000 or $9,000 per ton. However, new installation processes have reduced costs and prices are approaching those of traditional systems under the right conditions.

Factors contributing to lower costs include savings in public, commercial, and even large residential applications, and increased competition from geothermal equipment (especially from major brands such as Bosch, Carrier, and Train). Installation using open loop, pumps and re-injection valves is cheaper than closed loop.
