Whether the summers are really hot or we just can’t stand the heat as we age, many of us are tempted to ditch the noisy, dripping window air conditioners and replace them with quieter, more efficient whole central air conditioning systems.

But we are not pursuing that idea any longer. Those of you with ducted forced air furnaces worry that replacing the heating system will be expensive and lead to inefficiencies. And if you don’t have ducts, you can’t imagine how they can be added without destroying the house and spending volumes. But adding a center beam is easier and cheaper than you might think.
When added to an existing forced-air heating system, central air costs $3,500 to $4,000 for a 2,000-square-foot home and can be done by two technicians in two to three days, often with little or no ductwork changes.
A home that requires double the ductwork, costs and labor time. But an experienced retrofit contractor can cleverly hide ductwork behind walls, behind shelves and in attics with minimal wall and ceiling cuts and very little mess.
What Is An Hvac Technician And What Do They Do?
The first thing – and perhaps the most important decision in installing central air conditioning in your home – is choosing the right equipment.
All cooling contractors should begin evaluating your home by performing a manual J load calculation from Air Conditioning Contractors of America. This determines how much heat your home gets. The calculation is easy to do and will show you what size unit you need. Switch to a different contractor if you want to determine the right unit for your home based on the experience of the person you are considering. Although largely influenced by where you live, many factors will affect the size of unit you need, including the amount of wall and attic insulation you have; types and location of windows and doors; and the orientation of your house towards the sun. The calculation will also alert you to the benefits of upgrading your home’s insulation. By making your home more energy efficient, you can reduce the amount of air conditioner you need.
Take these steps when deciding which central air unit is right for your home size.

Using a heat gain calculation, your contractor will recommend air conditioner sizing, expressed in tonnage per hour or Btu (Btu/h). One ton equals 12,000 Btu per hour. Why is getting the right size unit so important?
A unit that is too small will not fully cool the rooms on the hottest days and will have to run longer than an appropriately sized unit so will cost more to run. An oversized compressor also costs more to run because it takes more electricity to run a larger unit. And a heavy unit does not reduce humidity effectively. This is because it cools the air so quickly that it closes before it has a chance to circulate the right amount of air past the coils to draw out the necessary moisture. The result is a room that doesn’t seem as cool as the temperature suggests. In fact, the room may feel damp and humid.
After sizing the unit, your contractor should talk to you about efficiency, which is expressed in Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER). The SEER rating is how many Btu’s an air conditioner puts out for every watt of electricity it consumes. The higher the SEER, the lower the operating costs.
How Heat Pumps Work
Federal law requires new A/C units to have a SEER of at least 13. These units have lower maintenance costs, higher quality, more safety features, better sound insulation and lower voltage requirements. Generally, the higher the SEER, the higher the initial cost of the unit.
Next, you need to decide what type of system to buy. There are two types. A “package system” combines a condenser, which cools the refrigerant and discharges warm air, with a fan and coil system that cools and blows air. Piping connects directly to the unit. It is essentially a large ducted wall air conditioner. But packet systems are rare.
With a “split system”, the condenser is outside the home and the fan and coil system is inside; They are connected to each other through pipes that carry the coolant. If you have a forced-radiation furnace, the coolant lines are connected to a cooling coil system built into the furnace air handler.

Sometimes it goes into an existing plenum. If this is not possible due to space constraints, the contractor shall separately fabricate the sheet metal plenum. If you don’t have a forced air supply, a fan and coil system is usually installed in the attic, where it delivers cool air through ducts. The 20- to 30-foot-long pipes carrying the refrigerant are masked to look like drain pipes.
Quiet condensers also make noise, so work with your contractor to find a location that isn’t near a bedroom or home office window. Do not place the condenser below deck or close it completely as it releases warm air from above. Any restriction of air flow will reduce the efficiency of the unit. However, you can hide the condenser in the landscape, as long as air circulates freely around it.
Most central air conditioners are split systems: the condenser is outside and the fan and coil system is inside, connected to the condenser by pipes that extend outside the house. Pipes can be disguised as part of a gutter and downspout system. Duct distribution serves rooms on the second floor through ceiling registers. Ducts pass through wardrobes on the way to rooms on the first floor.

You should review your channels. The large volume of air produced by the air conditioner requires frequent changes. Ironically, older duct systems, which are larger, work best when retrofitting a central air conditioner. (As the heating industry learned more about airflow dynamics and the size of furnaces and delivery systems, ducts became smaller.)
Since most retrofit air conditioning systems have the fan and air exchanger unit installed in the attic, the challenge is to replace the supply and return ducts to the ceiling registers in the lower first and second floor rooms.
Ducts supplying rooms on the second floor are usually pulled down between the attic and ceiling joists, where they are connected to ceiling registers. Ducts supplying rooms on the first floor pass through closets on the second floor wherever possible.

The first step your contractor will take to determine the location of the duct is to draw a second floor plan and lay it out over the first floor plan. “In 99 percent of homes,” says Frank Scarangello of Staten Island, New York-based Scaron Heating and Air Conditioning, “second-floor closets give you access to first-floor ceiling closet spaces.”
Vessels in cupboards take up less space than you might think. Most vessels are 12×6 inches or 10×8 inches, so even in a relatively small 2×4 foot cabinet, they take up only 4 of the available 64 cubic feet. Some refrigeration contractors may recommend using “flex duct” (small, inexpensive flexible tubing) instead of rigid square ducts. But avoid flexible tubing in active cabinets — it doesn’t hold up well to wear and tear and easy punctures.
What kind of mess can you expect if you have to install ductwork? In most cases, the wall and ceiling surfaces are largely intact. Holes must be cut in the ceilings of the first and second floors for the registers, and some of the closet floors on the second floor will be surgically removed to accommodate the new ductwork. But these holes are very small and can easily get confused.
